The Aging BrainBy Timothy Jennings, MDThe Aging Brain by Timothy Jennings is full of information to enable us to slow or even prevent dementia and to age healthily. Some of the information is technical though also helpful. There is also good information that is clear and easy to understand. Each chapter ends with a summary of Learning Points and also an Action Plan of things to do to get healthier and to stay healthy. Of course we need to eat right which includes avoiding sugar, and we need to exercise our mind and our body and get seven or eight hours of sleep to keep our brains healthy. Jennings shows how our beliefs affect the health of our minds and that not all beliefs are healthy. In the chapter on Mental Stress and Aging he covers issues of worry, guilt and conflict. In the chapter on Love and Death he suggests we need to come to terms with our own mortality and he describes how each religion views death differently. He asks “Does any evidence exist to support a belief in an after life?” pg 168 Jennings gives an amazing illustration: Christian teaching says we have three parts – body, soul and spirit. He compares this with computer science which has three parts – hardware, software and a power source. This illustration/information is worth the price of the book. There is excellent information here on most any health topic related to the aging of the mind. Dr. Jennings is a psychiatrist and psychopharmocologist.

I thought I already knew everything about how to slow down the aging process due to all of the books and scientific abstracts I read on this subject, but this book by Dr. Jennings has taught me quite a few new things! My husband and I both have strived to keep the healthiest lifestyle habits for decades, and yet, we are still starting to experience memory and cognitive issues in our later years. This is such a mystery to me, and so, I keep reading and learning with the hope of stopping our mental decline. Thus, I have read just about every book on this subject by knowledgeable doctors. This book is the one I would recommend to friends and family. The Aging Brain is holistic in that it covers every aspect of health and explains very clearly how important they are to keeping our brain in good working order. Dr. Jennings provides a lot of technical information with citations to back up his statements, but I believe a person with no medical background whatsoever will be able to understand it all. He helps the average reader by listing each chapter's main points at the end of the chapter, along with key action points one may want to take to help reduce the risk of dementia. Thus, this book was written with readers at all levels of education in mind. All I can say is that I am just half-way through this book, and I have already learned several significant new things from Dr. Jennings about staying healthy. Others less well-read will learn a phenomenal amount of useful information on brain health from this book! I will be making adjustments to our diet as a result of what I've learned, and the chapter on sleep has been more helpful to us than several visits to a sleep specialist has been for my husband.I highly recommend everyone who is interested in staying as healthy as possible - throughout their ENTIRE life - read this book!

As an 88-year-old in a retirement community, I am surrounded by the problem. At times it seems almost epidemic The spouses of my best friends are struggling with decisions. Dr. Jennings has done a magnificent job in explaining longer words like telomeres. epigenetics, and ginkcolides, but why does a big Mac taste so good occasionally? At times he comes across as a friendly counselor, at other times as a pastor and still you know him as a physician who has lived through the agonizing death of his mother-in-law. from dementia and Alzheimer's. It's hard to teach a guy my age new words, but the cover says the author is a master psychopharmacologist, and after reading the book I agree even though if I were with him I would simply call him 'Doc.".

My father had dementia for a few years before he passed away. I am in my early to mid 50s now and find myself worrying about getting dementia when I become forgetful or feel scatterbrained. I heard about this book and a local Christian talk show and decided to order it. I’m so glad I did. It is an awesome book. Not too hard to read and very informative. The author goes over so many things that people don’t think about which can affect the brain like sugar, exercise, sleep, food you eat, relationships, etc. The summary bullet points at the end of each chapter can easily be referenced after reading the book for reminders. It is definitely a book that I can highly recommend

I am still reading this wonderful book. Thank you Dr. Jennings for the research you have done and putting it down for us so that we can read and apply this principles for our well-being. I have applied a few things in this book and the results are profound...I have started to exercise and I feel relaxed, before i used to run on the road for three to six miles while not enjoying and I did not have any joy in me, felt wasted and forced like to get and start another run and I never lost any weight that I wanted to loose and my cholesterol level never dropped ...but now I just run on the treadmill for few minutes like 10-15, I lift weights and I do a lot of walking the result is" I feel joyful, at peace and I will be taking my blood work soon to see the results...in other words your advice to do those exercise you enjoy most has better results is true. Many other advises you have given is good and indeed is like it removes a lot of burden in my heart... I will highly recommend this book. I have bought several to give to the family and friends. May God continue to use you.
