Living With History (New Church's Teaching Series), by Fredrica Harris Thompsett

Review

Fredrica Harris Thompsett offers a lively, engaging introduction to Anglican history and demonstrates its significance for the contemporary church. (Anglican Theological Review)Living with History is well titled. It's about life, and it's conversational―Fredrica Thompsett has some great one-liners. In this fifth volume of the New Church's Teaching Series, she has made history accessible to non-historians. . . . We can thank Professor Thompsett for reconnecting us to our rich and speckled past, a human path infused with the divine. (Episcopal Life)Each denomination has its own history and related perspectives, and Living With History is written from a particularly Anglican slant. It should prove to be a valuable resource for Anglicans interested in the forces that have shaped the denomination, as well as reminding us that history is relevant. (Christian Library Journal)Living With History . . . is a fascinating book, not of the details of history but of how we interpret and use it, how we remember past events in order to deal with present questions. (The Anglican Journal)Fredrica Harris Thompsett . . . 'looks backward in order to move forward.' Using ten touchstones of history ranging from Common Prayer to the civil rights movement, she provides context for contemporary controversies by examining ancient ones. . . . Thompsett has created a valuable primer, written in an accessible anecdotal style for those who seek to renew their knowledge of the historical church even as they shape its future. (Cathedral Age)Even longtime Episcopalians should find material in Living with History which will make them think and ask questions about their church and their faith. . . . Thompsett's book is written for the inquirer with late twentieth-century sensibilities. It begins with the author's personal views, and in its contents includes as wide a spectrum of the church as possible. It should encourage readers to continue their investigations of a variety of aspects of church history. (Anglican and Episcopal History)

The book outlines the Episcopal Church as it has developed through history - emphasizing the effect of history on the Church and the effect of Church on history. The author, at the end of the book, summarizes 7 tenets which I wish she would have placed in the front - as the entire book serves to support these 7 pillars of Episcopal thought as influenced by and developed through history:*Seek Common Ground*Value Conservation*Seek the Broadest Understanding*Appreciate Ambiguity*Make Room for Imagination*Ask Questions*Encourage One AnotherWithin these 7 tenets as they evolved through Episcopalian Church history are the elements that make the Episcopal Church unique. A good read for the perspective of "why" some of these tenets developed.

Interesting book but dated. I read this in a course setting and the discussions were helpful. Clearly an important female professor who has added much insight over many years to help the church see itself in important ways.

Great series from an Anglican point of view.

I enjoy reading history, so this was a good read on the past of the Anglican and Episopalian churches and how they developed.

For me the book is helping me very much. It gives a new understanding of my church

Dr. Thompsett is a competent historian but this work is not worthy of her standards. It leans too heavily on the '60s agenda and on a feminist viewpoint. She can do better.

The Episcopal church in the twentieth century took advantage of the general availability of publishing to good advantage, compiling through several auspices different collections and teaching series, the latest of which was only completed a few years ago. There have been 'unofficial' collections of teaching texts, such as the Anglican Studies Series by Morehouse press, put out in the 1980s, as well as an earlier teaching series. However, each generation approaches things anew; the New Church Teaching Series, published by Cowley Publications (a company operated as part of the ministry of the Society of St. John the Evangelist - SSJE - one of the religious/monastic communities in the Episcopal church, based in the Boston area) is the most recent series, and in its thirteen volumes, explores in depth and breadth the theology, history, liturgy, ethics, mission and more of the modern Anglican vision in America. This fifth volume, 'Living with History' by Fredrica Harris Thompsett, takes a look at the role of history in a unique way. Rather than looking at the linear description of history as a timeline of dates, times, places and people (some of which is covered in other volumes of this series anyway), she develops the idea of history in a 'backwards' fashion, by looking at key issues alive in the church today, and then tracing back to the historical forces that shape and influence those issues. In one chapter, Thompsett looks at 'ten touchstones' of the history of the church and community. These begin with the call to be in covenant relationship with God (this occurs several times in the biblical texts, actually), through various points such as the Incarnation (Jesus in the world), the development of the Bible in English, etc. One may quibble with some of her choices; as an historian with a purpose, she is necessarily selective with regard to her developmental strands (indeed, every historian is selective, given the astonishing amount of detail available and limited number of pages any publisher is willing to print).Issues Thompsett weaves together in this text include living with change (at one point she confesses there was a point that she thought the church would, and possibly should, never change), living with community (which includes history), and living with traditions and continuity. This is a very forward-looking volume.Fredrica Harris Thompsett teaches church history at EDS, the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A lay leader in the church (one of few laypersons among the authors of books in this or other church teaching series), she is a popular lecturer and conference leader. Each of the texts is relatively short (only two of the volumes exceed 200 pages), the print and text of each easy to read, designed not for scholars but for the regular church-goer, but not condescending either - the authors operate on the assumption that the readers are genuinely interested in deepening their faith and practice. Each volume concludes with questions for use in discussion group settings, and with annotated lists of further readings recommended.

This book is wonderful! Sometimes it's hard to find any levity with the current administration, but many parts of this book made me laugh out loud. It left me with a sense of hope along with a list of resources to channel that hope. I'm keeping this copy but will order additional copies as Christmas gifts. Laughing is healthy.

I love this book! It is very cleverly written and I absolutely adore the Where's-Waldo-style that the detailed illustrations provide. I have scanned the pages thoroughly, again and again, searching for all of the references to the many terrible Trump headlines - now "enjoying" them in picture form.

Goodnight Trump: An Unauthorised Parody is a board book for adults by NYT best-selling author Erich Origen and Gan Golan. Very much in the style of Goodnight Moon, in the very classy room sits Donald, looking very much the spoiled child so many believe him to be, surrounded by all the elements of his presidency. The clever illustrations and rhyming text itemise these and, thanks to the media and copious tweets, they will be familiar to everyone.Yes, this book quite closely parallels Goodnight Moon in style, setting and illustrations, but obviously with significant differences. This is a quick read and should be read more than once, because each reading will reveal additional items in the classy bedroom of America’s 45th president. Examples include the items on the bedside chest, the animal skin rug, the statues on the mantlepiece, what replaces Goodnight Moon’s balloon, the items in the bookcase, all of particular significance with respect to Trump and the events of his term. Some touches are so subtle or understated as to not be apparent without careful examination of the illustrations, like the scrolling banner on the newsroom screen, the names on the picture frame, the book, game and video titles. Origen and Golan manage to include so many of the aspects of Trump’s presidency which distress, disgust, dismay or embarrass, that they will not have missed many, although new ones do appear daily. The authors note that in Goodnight Moon, bunny is bidding goodnight to all those things in his life that will still be there in the morning when he wakes. In Goodnight Trump, they’re things that most people, but in particular those to whom the book is dedicated (children in detention centres apart from their parents, refugee children denied asylum, students killed by gun violence, mothers and infants suffering lack of access to healthcare), wish would go away forever. At the end of the book, the authors list organisations that empower children and protect their rights, and for this alone, this witty, insightful and thought-provoking book is worth a read. This unbiased review is from a copy provided by Scribe Publications Australia

By the same authors who wrote the wonderful Goodnight Bush, Goodnight Trump is even better.

....chock-a-block full of great jokes on trump (carefully look at all the illustrations!). Loved it!

This is such a funny parody. The tidbits about the book and the authors were as entertaining as the book itself.

Very stupid!

Really funny gift. Only reason it's getting 4 stars is because the book had some box cutter marks on it.

1 The Hermetic Philosophy. “The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding.” —The Kybalion. From old Egypt have come the fundamental esoteric and occult teachings which have so strongly influenced the philosophies of all races, nations and peoples, for several thousand years. Egypt, the home of the Pyramids and the Sphinx, was the birthplace of the Hidden Wisdom and Mystic Teachings. From her Secret Doctrine all nations have borrowed. India, Persia, Chaldea, Medea, China, Japan, Assyria, ancient Greece and Rome, and other ancient countries partook liberally at the feast of knowledge which the Hierophants and Masters of the Land of Isis so freely provided for those who came prepared to partake of the great store of Mystic and Occult Lore which the masterminds of that ancient land had gathered together.        In ancient Egypt dwelt the great Adepts and Masters who have never been surpassed, and who seldom have been equaled, during the centuries that have taken their processional flight since the days of the Great Hermes. In Egypt was located the Great Lodge of Lodges of the Mystics. At the doors of her Temples entered the Neophytes who afterward, as Hierophants, Adepts, and Masters, traveled to the four corners of the earth, carrying with them the precious knowledge which they were ready, anxious, and willing to pass on to those who were ready to receive the same. All students of the Occult recognize the debt that they owe to these venerable Masters of that ancient land.        But among these great Masters of Ancient Egypt there once dwelt one of whom Masters hailed as “The Master of Masters.” This man, if “man” indeed he was, dwelt in Egypt in the earliest days. He was known as Hermes Trismegistus. He was the father of the Occult Wisdom; the founder of Astrology; the discoverer of Alchemy. The details of his life story are lost to history, owing to the lapse of the years, though several of the ancient countries disputed with each other in their claims to the honor of having furnished his birthplace—and this thousands of years ago. The date of his sojourn in Egypt, in that his last incarnation on this planet, is not now known, but it has been fixed at the early days of the oldest dynasties of Egypt—long before the days of Moses. The best authorities regard him as a contemporary of Abraham, and some of the Jewish traditions go so far as to claim that Abraham acquired a portion of his mystic knowledge from Hermes himself.        As the years rolled by after his passing from this plane of life (tradition recording that he lived three hundred years in the flesh), the Egyptians deified Hermes, and made him one of their gods, under the name of Thoth. Years after, the people of Ancient Greece also made him one of their many gods—calling him “Hermes, the god of Wisdom.” The Egyptians revered his memory for many centuries—yes, tens of centuries—calling him “the Scribe of the Gods,” and bestowing upon him, distinctively, his ancient title, “Trismegistus,” which means “the thrice-great”; “the great-great”; “the greatest-great”; etc. In all the ancient lands, the name of Hermes Trismegistus was revered, the name being synonymous with the “Fount of Wisdom.”        Even to this day, we use the term “hermetic” in the sense of “secret”; “sealed so that nothing can escape”; etc., and this by reason of the fact that the followers of Hermes always observed the principle of secrecy in their teachings. They did not believe in “casting pearls before swine,” but rather held to the teaching “milk for babes; meat for strong men,” both of which maxims are familiar to readers of the Christian scriptures, but both of which had been used by the Egyptians for centuries before the Christian era.        And this policy of careful dissemination of the truth has always characterized the Hermetics, even unto the present day. The Hermetic Teachings are to be found in all lands, among all religions, but never identified with any particular country, nor with any particular religious sect. This because of the warning of the ancient teachers against allowing the Secret Doctrine to become crystallized into a creed. The wisdom of this caution is apparent to all students of history. The ancient occultism of India and Persia degenerated, and was largely lost, owing to the fact that the teachers became priests, and so mixed theology with the philosophy, the result being that the occultism of India and Persia has been gradually lost amidst the mass of religious superstition, cults, creeds and “gods.” So it was with Ancient Greece and Rome. So it was with the Hermetic Teachings of the Gnostics and Early Christians, which were lost at the time of Constantine, whose iron hand smothered philosophy with the blanket of theology, losing to the Christian Church that which was its very essence and spirit, and causing it to grope throughout several centuries before it found the way back to its ancient faith, the indications apparent to all careful observers in this Twentieth Century being that the Church is now struggling to get back to its ancient mystic teachings.        But there were always a few faithful souls who kept alive the Flame, tending it carefully, and not allowing its light to become extinguished. And thanks to these staunch hearts, and fearless minds, we have the truth still with us. But it is not found in books, to any great extent. It has been passed along from Master to Student; from Initiate to Hierophant; from lip to ear. When it was written down at all, its meaning was veiled in terms of alchemy and astrology, so that only those possessing the key could read it aright. This was made necessary in order to avoid the persecutions of the theologians of the Middle Ages, who fought the Secret Doctrine with fire and sword; stake, gibbet and cross. Even to this day there will be found but few reliable books on the Hermetic Philosophy, although there are countless references to it in many books written on various phases of Occultism. And yet, the Hermetic Philosophy is the only Master Key which will open all the doors of the Occult Teachings!        In the early days, there was a compilation of certain Basic Hermetic Doctrines, passed on from teacher to student, which was known as “THE KYBALION,” the exact significance and meaning of the terms having been lost for several centuries. This teaching, however, is known to many to whom it has descended, from mouth to ear, on and on throughout the centuries. Its precepts have never been written down, or printed, so far as we know. It was merely a collection of maxims, axioms, and precepts, which were non-understandable to outsiders, but which were readily understood by students, after the axioms, maxims, and precepts had been explained and exemplified by the Hermetic Initiates to their Neophytes. These teachings really constituted the basic principles of “The Art of Hermetic Alchemy,” which, contrary to the general belief, dealt in the mastery of Mental Forces, rather than Material Elements—the Transmutation of one kind of Mental Vibrations into others, instead of the changing of one kind of metal into another. The legends of the “Philosopher’s Stone” which would turn base metal into Gold, was an allegory relating to Hermetic Philosophy, readily understood by all students of true Hermeticism.        In this little book, of which this is the First Lesson, we invite our students to examine into the Hermetic Teachings, as set forth in THE KYBALION, and as explained by ourselves, humble students of the Teachings, who, while bearing the title of Initiates, are still students at the feet of HERMES, the Master. We herein give you many of the maxims, axioms and precepts of THE KYBALION, accompanied by explanations and illustrations which we deem likely to render the teachings more easily comprehended by the modern student, particularly as the original text is purposely veiled in obscure terms.        The original maxims, axioms, and precepts of “THE KYBALION” are printed herein, in quotation marks, the proper credit being given. Our own work is printed in the regular way, in the body of the work. We trust that the many students to whom we now offer this little work will derive as much benefit from the study of its pages as have the many who have gone on before, treading the same Path to Mastery throughout the centuries that have passed since the times of HERMES -TRISMEGISTUS—the Master of Masters—the Great-Great. In the words of “THE KYBALION”: “Where fall the footsteps of the Master, the ears of those ready for his Teaching open wide.” —The Kybalion. “When the ears of the student are ready to hear, then cometh the lips to fill them with Wisdom.” —The Kybalion.        So that according to the Teachings, the passage of this book to those ready for the instruction will attract the attention of such as are prepared to receive the Teaching. And, likewise, when the pupil is ready to receive the truth, then will this little book come to him, or her. Such is The Law. The Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect, in its aspect of The Law of Attraction, will bring lips and ear together—pupil and book in company. So mote it be!         2 The Seven  Hermetic Principles. “The Principles of Truth are Seven; he who knows these, understandingly, possesses the Magic Key before whose touch all the Doors of the Temple fly open.” —The Kybalion. The Seven Hermetic Principles, upon which the entire Hermetic Philosophy is based, are as follows:        I.THE PRINCIPLE OF MENTALISM.    II.THE PRINCIPLE OF CORRESPONDENCE.    III.THE PRINCIPLE OF VIBRATION.    IV.THE PRINCIPLE OF POLARITY.    V.THE PRINCIPLE OF RHYTHM.    VI.THE PRINCIPLE OF CAUSE AND EFFECT.    VII.THE PRINCIPLE OF GENDER.        These Seven Principles will be discussed and explained as we proceed with these lessons. A short explanation of each, however, may as well be given at this point. I. The Principle of Mentalism. “THE ALL is MIND; The Universe is Mental.” —The Kybalion.        This Principle embodies the truth that “All is Mind.” It explains that THE ALL (which is the Substantial Reality underlying all the outward manifestations and appearances which we know under the terms of “The Material Universe”; the “Phenomena of Life”; “Matter”; “Energy”; and, in short, all that is apparent to our material senses) is SPIRIT, which in itself is UNKNOWABLE and UNDEFINABLE, but which may be considered and thought of as AN UNIVERSAL, INFINITE, LIVING MIND. It also explains that all the phenomenal world or universe is simply a Mental Creation of THE ALL, subject to the Laws of Created Things, and that the universe, as a whole, and in its parts or units, has its existence in the Mind of THE ALL, in which Mind we “live and move and have our being.” This Principle, by establishing the Mental Nature of the Universe, easily explains all of the varied mental and psychic phenomena that occupy such a large portion of the public attention, and which, without such explanation, are non-understandable and defy scientific treatment. An understanding of this great Hermetic Principle of Mentalism enables the individual to readily grasp the laws of the Mental Universe, and to apply the same to his well-being and advancement. The Hermetic Student is enabled to apply intelligently the great Mental Laws, instead of using them in a haphazard manner. With the Master-Key in his possession, the student may unlock the many doors of the mental and psychic temple of knowledge, and enter the same freely and intelligently. This Principle explains the true nature of “Energy,” “Power,” and “Matter,” and why and how all these are subordinate to the Mastery of Mind. One of the old Hermetic Masters wrote, long ages ago: “He who grasps the truth of the Mental Nature of the Universe is well advanced on The Path to Mastery.” And these words are as true to-day as at the time they were first written. Without this Master-Key, Mastery is impossible, and the student knocks in vain at the many doors of The Temple. II. The Principle of Correspondence. “As above, so below; as below, so above.” —The Kybalion.        This Principle embodies the truth that there is always a Correspondence between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of Being and Life. The old Hermetic axiom ran in these words: “As above, so below; as below, so above.” And the grasping of this Principle gives one the means of solving many a dark paradox, and hidden secret of Nature. There are planes beyond our knowing, but when we apply the Principle of Correspondence to them we are able to understand much that would otherwise be unknowable to us. This Principle is of universal application and manifestation, on the various planes of the material, mental, and spiritual universe—it is an Universal Law. The ancient Hermetists considered this Principle as one of the most important mental instruments by which man was able to pry aside the obstacles which hid from view the Unknown. Its use even tore aside the Veil of Isis to the extent that a glimpse of the face of the goddess might be caught. Just as a knowledge of the Principles of Geometry enables man to measure distant suns and their movements, while seated in his observatory, so a knowledge of the Principle of Correspondence enables Man to reason intelligently from the Known to the Unknown. Studying the monad, he understands the archangel. III. The Principle of Vibration. “Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.” —The Kybalion.        This Principle embodies the truth that “everything is in motion”; “everything vibrates”; “nothing is at rest”; facts which Modern Science endorses, and which each new scientific discovery tends to verify. And yet this Hermetic Principle was enunciated thousands of years ago, by the Masters of Ancient Egypt. This Principle explains that the differences between different manifestations of Matter, Energy, Mind, and even Spirit, result largely from varying rates of Vibration. From THE ALL, which is Pure Spirit, down to the grossest form of Matter, all is in vibration—the higher the vibration, the higher the position in the scale. The vibration of Spirit is at such an infinite rate of intensity and rapidity that it is practically at rest—just as a rapidly moving wheel seems to be motionless. And at the other end of the scale, there are gross forms of matter whose vibrations are so low as to seem at rest. Between these poles, there are millions upon millions of varying degrees of vibration. From corpuscle and electron, atom and molecule, to worlds and universes, everything is in vibratory motion. This is also true on the planes of energy and force (which are but varying degrees of vibration); and also on the mental planes (whose states depend upon vibrations); and even on to the spiritual planes. An understanding of this Principle, with the appropriate formulas, enables Hermetic students to control their own mental vibrations as well as those of others. The Masters also apply this Principle to the conquering of Natural phenomena, in various ways. “He who understands the Principle of Vibration, has grasped the sceptre of power,” says one of the old writers.

This is a hermetic classic in a top-notch heirloom hard cover; well worth the money spent!

The publishers decided to put in an extra 20 page intro at the begining of the book. The books own introduction is 5 pages and the first chapter of the book is 7 pages. This would be a great book if it wasn't for the addition of this EXTRA introduction.

Most certainly not the easiest book to read but it is profound and will give you new answers or enlightment every time you read it. Definitely a book to have in this hard copy edition so that you can read it again and again until some of the mysteries of life have come to light!

The important thing to remember when reading this work is THE ALL knew you were searching. Your free will is already pre-destined... Enjoy.

This book is beautiful, it shipped very fast. It's an amazing read, very conceptual. Not for everyone, not everyone is going to get it, or even agree with Hermetic principles. But if you know, you know. All is mental.

BEAUTIFUL. I am a book lover/occult lit collector. This is a lovely edition of The Kybalion. Comes in shrink wrap. Large Sticker on back came off easy. Book has a nice ribbon marker. Leather feel to the book... Gold page edges (when book is closed the pages are gold) Matches cover nicely. Opens really nicely for reading too. The content is wonderful to revisit again and again. Holds its ground in many arenas of thinking.

This is an interesting book and I think there is some truth or at least utility in some of the thoughts presented. It is quite old though so some of the theories and facts given need to be understood as an opinion of the time!

Honestly one of my favorite books of all time. If you are interested in natural laws then you will love this book.

Dilmun and its Gulf Neighbours

Review

"Crawford provides and authoritative summary of the archaeological past of an intriguing and little-known country, Dilmun....Crawford's book is a well-illustrated introduction to the archaeological `problem' of Dilmun. Clearly a scholarly work, it deserves a place in college and university libraries. All levels." Choice"...both the thorough updating of all the available information and the richness of her remarks and working hypotheses have resulted in a very stimulating contribution for her own colleagues in the field..." Book Description

Harriet Crawford presents a scholarly and up-to-date account of the archaeology of the Arabian Gulf from c.4,500-1500 BC. It offers a new interpretation of the structure of the urban, centralized and probably literate society of the Early Dilmun period (C. 2,000-1500 BC) using material from the recently excavated site of Saar on the the main Bahrain island.Like the neighbouring societies in Oman and the Emirates, Dilmun was greatly influenced by its participation in the complex trade routes linking it to Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.

Great reference book -- almost a sequel to "Looking For Dilmun". I would have rated five stars except for the cost of the book.

In my studies of Mesopotamia, I had never really known much about Dilmun and Magan, places which are mentioned in several Mesdopotamian texts. My choice was between Geoffrey Bibby's book on Dilmun published in 1972, and this book which was published in 1998. Having read Professor Crawford's book `Sumer and the Sumerians' I finally decided on her book primarily because it was more recent. The book, which focuses on the period 5000-1700BC, is a detailed survey of the findings from about 125 archaeological sites on the Arabian side of the Persian Gulf from the island of Falaika at the head of the Gulf, the `Eastern Province' of Arabia including Tarut Island and the Bahrain Islands, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates to the Musandum at the Straits of Hormuz, the interior sites of Oman and the coastal sites along the east side of that peninsula down to the most easterly point of the Arabian Peninsula at Ras al Junayz.Chapter 1: The Setting, describes the physical setting of the area, and provides the rationale for identifying Dilmun with the Eastern Province and the islands of Bahrain, while noting that references to Dilmun in the Mesopotamian texts may have referred to different parts of this area at different times The copper rich sites in Oman is the reason for identifying it with Magan whose copper mines were of considerable importance to the Sumerian and Akkadian dynasties.Chapter 2: The Earliest Settlements, covers the archaeological sites for the earliest period period of human settlement in the Eastern Province and Bahrain from about 5000BC to 3000BC which is the time of the Ubaid, Uruk, and Jemdat Nasr periods in Mesopotamia. Current archaeological evidence is sparse, but it seems that after the initial settlement phase during the 5th millenium, these were largely deserted during most of the 4th millenium until the Jemdat Nasr period when contacts between these areas and Mesopotamia revive.Chapter 3: The Development of Dilmun, covers the archaological sites and textual evidence of the 3rd millenium. There is little evidence of settlement in the Eastern Province and Bahrain until about 2500BC, when the first urban settlement developed on Tarut Island where workshops for pottery manufacture, and other material such as lapis lazuli, copper, and steatite have been excavated. On Bahrain Island itself, the vast area of ancient burial mounds at Saar date from around 2500BC and were built and often reused over a period of about 2000 years lasting into the Hellenistic age. Professor Crawford points out that over the past 30 years surveys and excavation of newly identified towns and villages show that enough local people lived on the island to fill the graves, arguing against the hypothesis that Bahrain was a necropolis for Mesopotamian royalty and aristocracy.Chapters 4 and 5 cover the period 2000-1750BC when there was a dramatic expansion of settlement on Bahrain This is the so-called period of `Early Dilmun', when it appears that Bahrain traders acted as the middlemen between the states of lower Mesopotamia and the mining businesses of the Oman Peninsula. The evidence for settlement, the architecture of domestic, workshop, and temple buildings, graves, and artefacts is described in considerable detail.Chapters 6 and 7 cover the same things for the Oman Peninsula, where direct contact with Mesopotamia seems to have been replaced by contacts with cities in Central Asia and with the Harappan cities on the Indus River.Chapter 8 provides an overview of the Development and Decline of Dilmun. This is a thorough and up to date study of the findings from the archaeological sites along the south side of the Arabian (Persian) Gulf and the Oman Peninsula. Of the 250+ references in the bibliography, fully two thirds were published in the 15 years immediately prior to the publication of this book in 1998. The descriptions of the architecture of buildings and tombs is well supported by photographs and illustrations, and the differences and similarity in styles between the two areas is also very clear. There are several maps showing the general area of most settlements, but only about half of the named sites are shown on any map. I eventually found a more detailed map of Oman and the UAE on the web, but still had to resort to Internet searches for information on those sites which I couldn't find on this map. Even so, this left about a dozen which were not listed in the index, and for which I have no idea as to even their general location. A small point perhaps, but I find that knowing where things are is helpful to my understanding.A similar observation can be made about dates. I recognize that it is obviously very difficult to pinpoint 3rd - 5th millenium dates with any certainty, but it would have helped if the author had included some kind of dating line even if it was broken down into every 250 years. I eventually developed one for myself but I still have some doubts about its accuracy. This is a fairly short book (the main body of the text is only 156 pages), but the level of detail is such that I found a single reading was insufficient for me to truly absorb what I was reading. As a result I had to reread it several times and make copious notes on the findings by site and time period. While this is not a criticism of the book it does mean that if you want to get the most from this book, then a quick read through is not going to do it unless you are very familiar with the latest archaelogical information.

As a researcher who has studied the Nuremberg Trials intensely, I found this book to be a fantastic summation of events, well written and concise, with many interesting, eye-opening inclusions. I'd give this 5 stars if only the author had included sources and a bibliography - neither of which are included. Further, jacket copy lists "events of those 11 days" in two spots - clearly a typo, for the International trial took 10 months, plus one month deliberation - or 11 months. Given the lack of documented sources, bibliography, and the blatant typo on the back and inside cover, I'm led to question the validity of some inclusions.

This was a good overview of the Nuremberg Trials. It has fewer pages than some other works on the subject, (I did not want to get bogged down and bored with a more detailed work). One thing which I would have liked was more detail as to the authority of the court to sit in judgement over the accused. This is not to excuse the accused, but rather to explain in more detail the authority of the court in such a precedent setting event. To that reason, another more detailed work may have been more beneficial.

The book is exactly as it is titled. It would have been a little more helpful and more interesting if there had been more on the backstories of the defendants, judges, and prosecutors. But I can't really fault the book for that. As it is, the book has all the main points of the first set of trials at Nuremberg.

Insight into the crimes of the Nazi area. It is difficult to imagine such actions by a state with Germany's long history of producing giants of the arts and classics. The fact that are well documented here goes a long way to keep them from being ignored by history.

Very interesting book to read about The Nuremburg Trials. Always heard about them but never understood everything that went on and was involved with the trials. Learned a lot READING this book.

A decent, short book but very little depth of content. The writer approached people, places, and events more like a skipping stone across a lake surface instead of demonstrating details that would have made his content resonate with the readers.

This is an excellent book about the Nuremberg trials. It tells in detail how the prosecution and defense presented its case. It also gives the verdict and the judgement of the court as well.

A useful summary of how senior Nazis were brought to trial. Some were sentenced to death, some to imprisonment, and a few were acquitted. The evidence presented was stomach-turning.

a must have book for every preacher.

Another classic from Cleophus Larue which is essential when experiencing the essence of Black Preaching. I cannot find many things to criticize within the text but I would have liked for it to have more on exegesis of scripture.

Awesome book! Great for new and seasoned preachers.

It is what it is. You must have an understanding of what it means to be able to preach to the people of God of whom is of this ethnical group. To preach it down to the soul when the scripture tells you to lean not to thy own understanding!

Great read very close to the bone.

I loved this book, all Australians should take the time to read it. 44 Days is totally factual, easy to read and packed with infomation. A fabulous historical record, of how close Aus was to destruction.

Like alot of our war experience only the grit of the front line operatives got us through.Any contact with higer officers seems to do more harm than good

Really good read ,action front to back

Papua New Guinea’s main airport, at its capital of Port Moresby, is Jackson’s International Airport. Many of us know that Sydney airport is named after Charles Kingsford-Smith, an Australian aviation hero, but few would have heard of John Jackson, another equally deserving Australian hero. Squadron Leader John Jackson was killed in action whilst leading a small group of Australian fighter pilots of No 75 Squadron defending Port Moresby against a massive Japanese air threat in a 44 day period in early 1942. This book tells the story, largely unknown or forgotten today, of this extraordinary air campaign which literally saved Australia.Michael Veitch has had a lifelong passion for aircraft and aviation and has previously published a couple of other WWII aviation related books. He displays great depth of research and obvious affection for the subject. Although the events in ’44 Days’ are adequately covered in official histories for those with the time and inclination to dig them out, Michael has done a great service to 75 Squadron's heritage, and general awareness, by breaking out the initial air defence of Port Moresby into a more readable format.Even though I’m a former Commanding Officer of 75 Squadron, with these events in my DNA, I was still turning pages to see what happened next. As we used to say, this book is a ‘cracking good read’. Michael has the happy knack of re-creating the period and making the reader feel right in the thick of the appalling conditions at the Seven Mile strip outside Port Moresby. The only consolation was that the Japanese at their bases north of the Owen Stanley Range endured equally appalling conditions. The Moresby air campaign is a tribute to Australian resilience, adaptability, and just plain old fashioned getting on with the job. It’s easy to get angry about the squadron’s apparent abandonment by higher HQ in Australia because of the atrocious conditions and slow logistics support. But things happened so fast in pure desperation, and everyone was totally committed to operations, that they just had to make the best of it. These days, instead of a single unsupported squadron, we'd normally deploy at least a wing, and usually a group, with plenty of capacity to oversee these issues. There are some obvious errors which will be corrected for the second edition. Sir Charles Burnett wasn't a Wing Commander when appointed Chief of Staff of the RAAF - he was a superannuated RAF Air Marshal, promoted to Acting RAAF Air Chief Marshal, a rank he subsequently retained – and Darwin was bombed on 19 February 1942, not 19 January.Regarding the first bombing of Darwin, I’m surprised that Michael omitted mention of the courageous American force of eleven Kittyhawks from the 49th Pursuit Group which was entirely destroyed with two of its pilots killed. However, they did manage to shoot down two Japanese bombers, the first enemy aircraft shot down over Australia. It isn’t generally known that it was American pilots who fought and died defending Australia when it was attacked for the first time in its history. The satellite airfields of Strauss and Livingstone near Darwin were named in honour of the two American pilots killed. A small point perhaps, but it helps explain the continuing operational bond between Australia and the USA which some find puzzling. The book clearly shows how the initial, largely chaotic but ultimately successful air defence of Port Moresby had a disproportionate strategic effect. Moresby’s complex of airstrips, ground installations and harbour facilities was absolutely vital for an Allied counter-attack, and by preventing Japanese air power from neutralising it, 75 Sqn and its Kittyhawks bought valuable time, but at great cost. The circumstances surrounding the death of the squadron’s beloved CO, ‘old’ John Jackson, are particularly poignant.Another issue in ’44 Days’ – the elephant in the room really - is defence preparedness. In the mid-1930s the United States wasn’t threatened by anyone, and was still suffering the lingering effects of the great depression. Yet it realised it had to upgrade its military capability in response to ominous developments in Europe, and it developed a range of modern fighter aircraft, including the P40 Kittyhawk. The lesson is clear. The best time to boost military capability is when you’re not at war and have time.’44 Days’ is an essential part of Australia’s history, and one which should make us better remember our true heroes. I thoroughly commend this wonderfully readable book.Bill Evans

A great story about the men of 75 Squadron RAAF holding out against the Japanese at Port Morseby at the peak of Japanese dominance in early 1942.The story is well researched and interesting, and is written at a pace that keeps the readers interest. This book is clearly written for an Australian audience, and even as an Australian certain parochial passages like "Then next morning, 5 April, Jackson led a force of seven Kittyhawks to attack seven bombers and their escort in an intense air battle that rivalled the fiercest engagements of the Battle of Britain." can be frustrating to anyone who has a fairly broad knowledge of air warfare in the Second World War. It is particularly disappointing in an otherwise well written book that such a ridiculous comparison is made, given that 75 Squadron's story is compelling enough in it's own right, and such statements achieve nothing but to discredit the author.Other than that small point though, this is a great story and an entertaining read that is worth a look for anyone with an interest in aerial warfare in the Second World War.
