A delight to read, and as always, useful notes and a good introduction.
Xenophon's writing on Cyrus' life in Books 5-8 continued to be dry and tedious. It is why I rated it 3 stars. I have not been interested per say in this historical account as illustrated by Xenophon (whom I admire greatly). His Anabasis was superb, but 2 lengthy volumes on Cyrus is an overreach. Yet, there were a few descriptions and quotes of Cyrus which Xenophon includes in this volume which I found to be interesting. For example, the number of soldiers per battle line and Cyrus' makeup of military brigades; the story around Panathea's mourning of her husband and tragedy were quite moving to read; detailed illustration of a Persian procession is quite informative when it relates to their sacrificial festival and victory celebration and finally Loeb's index, is quite helpful for research and study! Towards the end of Cyrus' life he makes a statement to his sons which I found quite poignant, so I will include it here " for I see that it is the soul that endues mortal bodies with life, as long as it is in them … as the soul will want intelligence just when it is separated from the unintelligent body; but when the spirit is set free, pure and untrammeled by matter, then it is likely to be most intelligent. When man is resolved in the primal elements, it is clear that every part returns to kindred matter, except the soul; that alone cannot be seen, either when present or when departing."
