From the Back Cover

Joey needed a second chance. The ranch needed a miracle. With her fledgling horse ranch, Hope Reins, in dire financial trouble, the last thing Kim Tschirret needed was one more problem. But when she met Joey, a former prizewinning jumper who had been abandoned, neglected, and malnourished to the point of blindness, she saw in him the same God-given potential she saw in every abused and abandoned child her ministry was created to serve. So, despite the challenges that would come with caring for a blind and wounded horse, Kim took a leap of faith and brought Joey home to Hope Reins. But as Joey struggled to adapt to his new surroundings, trainers, and pasture-mate, the staff’s confidence began to falter. Could Joey learn to trust again―to connect with the children who needed him so badly? What if they couldn’t take care of Joey? And how much longer could they afford to try?A heartwarming story of loyalty, friendship, and healing, Joey is a profound testament to the power of blind faith. From the flap:“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?”“Yes, I’m calling from the Nash farm off US 60. There are several badly emaciated horses out in the field, and some of them appear to be dead.”“Okay, ma’am, someone from the sheriff’s department and animal control will be there shortly.”Penny tucked her phone into her pocket and headed toward the stables. “Please, God, don’t let there be any more like these in there.”All of the stalls were empty. Then, just as she was about to leave, she saw a hoof sticking out from behind the end stall. She dropped to her knees, mud and manure seeping into her jeans. Her heart caught in her throat. She recognized the familiar short blond tail, the white-and-black polka-dotted coat hidden beneath the crusted-on mud and filth.Three dead, she lamented. The silence was broken by the sound of the front gate slamming shut. The authorities had arrived. As she stood shivering in the rain while answering the sheriff’s questions, a shout pierced the melancholy air. “Hey! This one is still alive!”Penny dashed back to the stalls, where an animal control officer held his hand against the fallen horse’s spotted nose.“Are you sure?” she asked eagerly.“Yes. I can feel air coming from his nostrils.”“Oh, thank God!” she said, fighting back tears.“Ma’am?” The sheriff looked at Penny. “Do you know this horse?”For the second time, Penny dropped to her knees beside the animal.“I do,” she said, gently touching the horse’s face. “His name is Joey.”

This memoir was the most touching book I’ve read in a very long time. As expected, I fell in love with Joey but what I didn’t expect was how much I would care for so many others in Joey’s story. It would be hard to pick a favorite character. Through them I was reminded that we are all in need of healing, and this story about others who continually learned (and re-learned) to trust again was amazingly powerful on a personal level. I highly recommend this book - your heart will definitely be touched.

It was such a well-written, engaging read! The book makes you want to meet the horses and draws you into lives of so many relatable people! One of my favorite reasons to read Christian fiction or nonfiction stories is how it inspires me or reminds me of a Scripture. By the second half,You keep in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. (Isaiah 26:3) was on repeat in my mind. I love the real aspect of grappling to go from worry and trust to trust and faith. I love seeing God in the intimate details that make up the complex big picture. So engaging, easily recommendable.Okay, no more words to say the simple, I love JOEYThank you for sharing him with us!

I was honored to be a part of the amazing book launch team for 'Joey' and as such, I was sent a copy of the book to read before it was published. Let me tell you, I read the book in 3 days and the only reason I didn't read it in one was because of school. It is a true story that tells the tale of a rescue horse and former champion jumper who tragically became blind because of abuse and neglect from a previous owner. Joey finds his way to a therapy center for kids and horses alike, a place called Hope Reins where they rescue horses and train them to be 'equine counselors' for the kids who come to Hope Reins for therapy. Once Joey arrives (with another horse who plays a big part in the story) he begins his long training to get him ready to help the kids, even though he is blind. Through his blind trust (literally) he touches kids and adults alike, from a small girl who won't talk to the volunteers at Hope Reins, helping to teach people what it means to truly trust wholeheartedly. To avoid any spoilers (we all know how annoying that is) I will just say that from the moment you pick up this book you will find it practically impossible to put it down until you finish it. Even for people who aren't necessarily horse enthusiasts, it is a touching story, and I will warn you that there is a big possibility of ugly crying once or twice. Even if you don't usually go for non-fiction animal stories, I highly recommend that you read this book as it is published. Besides being a story of an amazing and sometimes human-like horse in his ability to sense emotions, it is a story of how a horse left to die because of his physical impairment helps everyone he meets to find healing and peace, and he can do the same for you through this amazing testimony of his too short life.In summary, GO PREORDER THIS BOOK!!! I promise you won't be disappointed.--DISCLAIMER-- I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher for being part of the launch team for this book.

A beautifully written book about determination, faith, and healing! One of the most heartwarming true stories I have read in a long time. The chapters flow like silk from one to another. It is a book that you just don’t want to end! Definitely a must read for anyone seeking an inspirational story about hope, the healing of a child’s heart, a beautiful blind horse, and amazing people!I received a digital copy of the book from the publisher.

Amazing true story about an amazing place! The overriding theme of Hope Reins and Joey the book is there is nothing outside of the Lord's power to redeem! Thank you Jen Bleakley for launching this story of Hope to a large audience for the glory of the Lord! I pray this amazing story gives true Hope to all who have the privilege of reading it! You do NOT want to miss this precious and true story!!!

I absolutely LOVED reading this book!!! There are so many different stories and insights to the lives of not only the horses, but those that volunteer and work with the horses and children. Sounds impossible, but the reader can easily relate to most of the people within the story if not find a little bit of herself in each of the people, as they discuss their personal fears, failures, doubts, and then the faith and trusts that brings them new hope, new life, it's amazing...I had to stop reading it while my children attended gymnastics, or otherwise sit there and ball my eyes out in public...it's truly moving! Thank you that the Father in Heaven sees us for what we have to offer and uses our strengths to do something great for so many! Thank you for trusting and writing this book, and thank you to those who shared their stories.

To be honest, I am not a horse person. The only horses I've ever really read about were in Louis L'amour westerns. BUT, that has changed now! I've just finished reading "Joey: How a blind rescue horse helped others learn to see" by Jennifer Marshall Bleakley (daughter of two of some of our best friends in St. Petersburg, FL, Bill and Julie Marshall). Joey will bless you as you read his true story. God will call you closer to Himself as you open your heart to the possibility that He desires to help, save, and restore broken and hurting people for His joy of purpose! Other than the Bible, Joey is now the only book ever that I have read every word from cover to cover. In regards to the Group Discussion Questions in the back of the book, I answer YES to #13 and #16! May you enjoy this book and discover the value of living 2 Corinthians 1:3-4!
