I usually dislike evil Eastern European murderer stories, for the same reason I dislike Mexican cartel stories. Too easy to pile on the gore without actually giving us a good story. This is an exception. Interesting, convoluted story, good narration, excellent writing, good police procedural. A little startled that he is now married to a woman he had dumped in the first book. She has little to do with the story, and generally i prefer that complicated personal issues not distract from the story.
As a retired American AP English Literature teacher, I entered retirement as the stereotypical literary snob. Very slowly, almost reluctantly, I ventured outside my comfort zone. Then I began the crime thriller genre, to my delight. Having read (and enjoyed) hundreds of these, I discovered the two DCI Craig Gillard novels. These are brilliantly written and engrossing stories. The romance is minimal, but sweet. The stories are plot driven, not deviating from where the reader is being led. Of the thousands of Kindle novels in my library, this is only the second review I've given, and the only one with five stars. Why? Remember the English teacher part? This is the only e-book I've read that has no grammatical, spelling, grammar usage, or spell check errors (a creature of habit who corrects without stopping the read). Congratulations on a very well-written and fascinating pair of novels. Looking forward to 2019's third in the series.
Great writing style. Continuous plot manipulation. Just when you think you will finish this chapter and wait to read later there is this one sentence that teases at the end that nudges you into a different time line and sequence of events. Yes, it is a work of fiction but you get wrapped up in the action with an emotional, "This can't be happening". Really enjoy this writer and his work.
Nick Louth is a very clever, twist and turns, mystery writer! At the moment, I’m on (iphone Kindle) page 3,254 of 4,385. Each time I think I’ve figured 'something out' or 'who done it', introduced is a “new essential element†or a “new suspectâ€!! If you haven’t before read a mystery novel by Nick Louth, why not try “The Body on the Shoreâ€? …and discover for yourself why Nick Louth is rated among the best seller mystery writers.
I've enjoyed these 2 books with Inspector Hilliard. They have inventive plot twists and I like hoe Hilliard works with his team and superior officers. Two questions, what is a ha-ha (see 1st paragraph chapter 13) and what happened to the grandfather in the end? Should he also have been charged and arrested?
Five stars is not enough for this book. The story was very well written. The twists and turns in the story were fabulous! One has to be SO aware of what seems casual , then turns lethal in minutes. A great new twist to a mystery. I read it straight through to the bend
Loved this next in series. Really well written, nice twist and turns and was a good complex story. Likeable characters and I liked that it was set in two counrtries, especially one I know nothing about. Can't wait for the next one!
Another very good and worthwhile read from Nick Louth. However, for me, it didn't quite live up to ' The Body in the Marsh' which was such an exceptional read, that I knew it would be hard to follow. Nevertheless I look forward to reading more of his novels.
