NO SPOILER HERE! I will not give you a “Reader’s Digest” condensed version of this book.Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon series is an exceptional creation. It is unique in that each one of the books is set in a different National Park, though there are some doubles. Ms. Barr’s descriptions of the park, the inner workings of the National Park System, history, environment, flora, fauna and applicable issues make reading these mysteries a fulfilling adventure. Like many such series, it will serve the reader well to read them in order. This isn’t necessary as each mystery will stand alone quite well. But Anna’s personal story is the thread that makes the series complete. Anna herself is a masterful creation. Human, flawed, introspective, complex, she is the window through which the reader sees much of the beauty our National Park System has to offer. From Mesa Verde, the Florida Keys, Lake Superior to environments that are dry, wet, cold, and hot, the drastically changing settings and Anna’s evolving personal life keep this series fresh and engaging. It will be no surprise to the reader that Ms. Barr is a former Park Ranger. I’ll admit I haven’t read the last three books in the series – with good reason. They are my emergency kit. When I have waded through a piece of substandard literary junk and need a dose of quality writing, an Anna Pigeon mystery is a perfect fix.

Anna Pigeon is now on fire fighting duty on Cumberland Island off Georgia, nesting grounds of the rare loggerhead turtles. There’s no fire yet, only the conditions for fire, so the crew is on presupression detail.A drug interdiction plane has been buzzing around the area looking for marijuana crops from the air. When it crashes, Anna gets assigned to help the aviation investigators. But as usual, Anna goes much deeper than the official investigation. Her sleuthing juices are stimulated when it becomes clear theat the plane was sabotaged. Since two men died in the crash, it's daunting to figure out which one was meant to be the target. The island is home to wild horses deer and wild pigs, and full of rattlesnakes, spiders and ticks. Anna is beleaguered by chiggers and ticks in this book, well as well suffering assaults from the human species. Between the insects and the heat, this is no island paradise. As usual there are plenty of interpersonal dramas among the park personnel, and Nevada Barr's characters are always vibrant and interesting. There's also an unexpected development in this book with FBI agent Frederick Stanton, Anna's long-distance boyfriend.I really like this series. Nevada Barr never fails to keep me riveted to the page.

Okay, so my title contains two words that aren't words. But I didn't want to keep repeating myself.Nevada Barr's storytelling skills and rich prose teleport you right into the middle of the park, the story, and the mind of her heroine Anna Pigeon. You can feel the oppressive humidity, feel your heartbeat accelerate with adrenaline when dangers lurk or suddenly appear and attack in this story. It's hard to talk about without giving anything away. I doubt that even knowing where the story is going could turn this into a boring predictable book. It's one of those wonderful books you could actually read twice and still enjoy. You don't even realize how easily you've surrendered the here and now to the world Barr has described and created for Anna Pigeon's adventures.I find myself now working with a former National Park Law Enforcement Officer/Ranger, and she knows the Nevada Barr "Ranger Pigeon" series well. She had nothing but praise for the technical details and politics of the job that Barr relates. This book is wowable... Oops, I did it again!

Cumberland Island National Seashore - where the Rich and Famous used to Live - makes an appearance in this installment of the "Anna Pigeon Travelogue / Mystery Series". It serves as a suitable backdrop for the mystery of a small airplane crash which kills two of the small Park's staff. While this was a rather enjoyable read, and in keeping with Nevada Barr's established characters, there are a couple of only lightly coated themes which I hope don't make it into all the remaining Anna Pigeon series: Anna needing to be physically beaten to a pulp; the NPS really don't like Women Rangers; and NPS Regional Brass are all about CYA.Still, I enjoy the Characters and the Story enough that I'm lining up my next Anna Pigeon read...

This takes place on Cumberland Island off the coast of Georgia in a nature preserve that's in a drought. Anna and a fire prevention crew are there to keep fire watch and to watch over the Loggerhead Turtles that come there to nest and lay eggs. The turtles are the endangered species, but Anna almost joins them as 2 attempts are made on her life along with 2 other murders in a plane crash. There is a motley bunch of suspicious characters that Ranger Pigeon has to sort out along with her personal life.

It's a pretty good read. The most redeeming part of the book is that it gives many descriptions of the beautiful and mysterious Cumberland Island off the coast of Georgia. This is why I read it. There are some historical accurate portions. The subplot of her sister and her boyfriend seemed to be totally irrelevant and unnecessary. That should have been axed entirely.
