Trying to escape from a bad relationship, Virginia Cunningham moves to the mountain to be near her good friend Becca (Logan's wife from a previous book), and also to try her hand at a new type of counseling with prisoners at the local maximum facility. There Gin runs into Atticuss, a cop and a family member of one of the prisoners. Things click between the two of them sexually at various BDSM parties, but the relationship part of it had many bumpy moments, as Gin and Atticuss work through past issues in their childhood in order to straighten out some issues haunting them today.Initially, I loved the book, and I did read it in one sitting, but there were a couple of things that downgraded it to four stars for me. How much crime is on this mountain? Lol. If I live there I'm moving. I enjoyed the relationship issues between Gin and Atticuss. Why was it necessary to throw in store robberies, prison breakouts, assaults and threats of rape? I don't think it is any coincidence that the books I loved the most from Cherise Sinclairs BDSM novels were the ones that didn't contain sex slavery rings, murder, robberies, etc. I realize that each story must have a conflict, but the relationship issues have enough of their own without adding in all the violence and mayhem. I am probably in the minority here, but I find those parts of the books to be rather boring.Lastly, while the relationship between Gin and Atticuss worked beautiful and started out red hot, somewhere along the story it kind of fell flat. While they worked out their problems satisfactorily, the romance seemed to fly out the window about halfway, and the story became more about their mental issues. The book wasn't disappointing, I just felt it could have been better.
3.75 âï¸In someways I really enjoyed this one and in others I was disappointed.I didn’t like Atticus a number of times in the first half of the book. he made up for it in the end. I understand that he had his own hang ups but he judged Gin a couple of times that were unfair. Same with Logan and Jake. Didn’t like Logan in this one. So he overheard a fight between Gin and Atticus (which was none of his business) and then cut her because he was the one who introduced her and he felt bad. So what happens if she decided she didn’t want to be a sub was she then not good enough for you.?I really liked Gin and loved how the author used books and portrayed how it is different from the books. I liked that she worked through her need to serve people but at the same time not to be a doormat. She fought when she was scared and when it was needed. I felt like with her profession she could see both sides in most arguments, but I wished she had of taken people to task more and not forgive them all so easily. Now on to Sawyers book
I own every CS book and am a huge fan, but the last 2 Shadowlands, and the last 2 1001 Dark Nights have been misses for me. I think it comes down to a couple of things. First, the storylines have gotten reasonably formulaic. One or both protagonists has/have commitment issues, despite the fact it is extremely clear to the reader from the outset they will get their HEA - there is never any real fear of that, which makes the character conflicts somewhat unimportant. Second, there is generally some amount of juvenile behavior from the female characters. These women are all in their late 20s or early 30s and they giggle, are called "cute", and sometimes behave like someone imagines a teenager might. Third, there are lots of criminals in CS's world. It's not like we are in Lexi Blake's private detective world where you would expect bad people to play a big role in your life. No, these are ordinary, reasonably affluent people who hang out at sex clubs, and yet they manage to get involved disproportionately with outlaws. Fourth, there is always some character or other lecturing the reader in BDSM 101.This was a much lighter take on BDSM than CS usually takes. Unlike previous reads, it took Gin and Atticus a long time to get really kinky together - there were what felt like innumerable conversations around taking time to build trust. Gin was too proper for someone who counselled kids in the system and prisoners - gosh darn it!! There was also a lot of praying going on. It felt like everything that might have created an edge to either the characters or the plot had been sanded down for consumption by conservative book group. I'd love to see this writer return to the maturity of her earlier work.
