Maybe there is a good ending to this book. Maybe the author of this memoir overcame the tragedy of the severe abuse she endure at the hands of her parents, and the failure of a mandated reporter like her doctor to report her rape as a child. But there is no excuse for not warning readers that the book contains very graphic descriptions of atrocities.I will finish reading the second half of the book, but I think that it is imperative that readers know how graphical the descriptions are, including the violent rape of a minor by a man who was years older, bigger, stronger, and had brought her to an isolated location in his car in order to rape her repeatedly. Then he took her home to her parents house and dropped her off there. And her mother reacted by buying her a dish of ice cream, which the girl was too upset to eat.I did finish reading the book I could almost recommend the last twenty percent if it made sense if it were read separately. Unfortunately it might not even if you are somebody else who is recovering from severe trauma, has recovered, or hopes to recover. I would recommend a book with more about the recovery and a clear but much less graphic, less triggering, perhaps more clinical summary of the abuse, perhaps as two clearly separated sections of the book. The second section probably starts at or very shortly before her arrival in Canada, but perhaps it could start slightly earlier if it were told differently.I cannot recommend this current book to any decent human being under any normal circumstances. It focuses too graphically and too long on detailing ways to destroy the humanity of victims, too little on how survivors survive during captivity, and far too little on how they recover afterwards.
Trigger warning: watch out.I find it endlessly aggravating that I am surprised into *flashbacks* that don't come on easily, because yes, I have been through a lot of treatment, but some authors feel the need to graphically depict scenes that can be written about much better without going into gritty detail, like a filmmaker using every bit of special effects that can be found to bring out horror when it can be done more artfully when you have talent. I have been reading for nearly sixty years and it has become a recent phenomenon among writers to try to depict sexual abuse and/or physical abuse and/or emotional abuse in as many details as possible. I never used to have nearly the difficulty I have today. That said, I applaud the author's success but recommend that you think twice about reading this book if you have a history of trauma in childhood. I read, or tried to read this as my husband's First Reads Kindle selection, on his Kindle, while we were traveling today, and I had to set it aside. It was just too triggering for me.
Profound read.A testament to the saying, "What doesn't doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."A gripping story that held me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.May all women regain their self worth and voice to this extent.Don't miss this one.
Captivated my attention within pages and I could not put it down. This is a must read - heartfelt, raw, intense and extremely inspiring. Thank you for sharing your story so others may too.
This book was painful, but wonderful. It takes you where the author has been and makes you feel a bit of what she felt. It leaves you feeling raw and vulnerable and strong. It has been a while since I finished a book in a day, and this one made the cut, I could not put down. I have also never left a review for a book before, but felt this one deserved it. My favorite kindle first book so far.
Many of us grew up in abusive families. We survived. Many of us buried our horrendous memories in our best effort to live our lives. Yes, this open, raw account opens the doors that need airing out. One step at a time. Yes, it brings up tough memories. Isn't it time to heal? If not now, when? Thank you for writing with such honesty, and telling a story that many aren't ready to hear. For those of us who are, I am very grateful for your help in facing some uncomfortable emotions, along the path to acceptance of self, righteous anger, and accepting all of who we were, to become who we are now. It's a tough story, but one that is critical to understanding the horror that happens in some homes, where family, religion, and protection fall by the wayside. It helped me understand the sibling relationships, and the underpinnings of why we had such difficulty with each other our whole lives . . . the big TRUST issue. Who doesn't want to be loved? Such an easy desire, but for some families, so elusive. This book helps us air out the treacherous odorous realities of our past, and let go of the blame, guilt, and resentment that lingers long beyond the healthy stage. Bravo! Excellent! Have the courage to read it! It's riveting & haunting & healing, all at the same time.
This was my Amazon First Reads pick for the month of March.I'm honestly not sure how to feel about this book. On one hand, it was an engrossing story that grabbed onto me and didn't want to let me go until I finished it. On the other hand, there was so much self-destruction and bouncing from one to cult to what sounded like another that I found myself getting annoyed. Reading about her growing up was hard because she had no control over that. Reading about her adult years was also hard because she did. At the end, I felt like we were told a half story. A story about a horrible childhood that turned into a dreadful adulthood with many questions left unanswered. I'm glad that it sounds like she finally found peace. I just wish she would have let us into that part of her life like she did the rest of it.
I didn’t finish it. The feelings it evoked were so dark, and I wasn’t sure there would be any redeeming value.
