I love the ideas in this book and after reading it think that if I had read it when I was a lot younger, I might have chosen a different career path. The infrastructure that he has outlined in the book is light weight and could be used 1 at a time or 20 depending on the time you wanted to spend for a few months and what sort of land you have available for a project like this. If you have a bit of land and are looking to add some easy value to it I see this working really well. Even if you want to do something else with the land, this could be a good way to get it prepped for something else. They are pretty good at disturbing the land, laying down fertilizer and in my opinion just fun to watch. I might give this a shot when I retire in a few years.
I have been studying this book and am making my first go at raising chickens this way; this book is well written, easy to read, enjoyable and the directions are clear. So far I think we are doing well with our chicks and by the end of this week we'll be moving them into the chicken tractor.8 weeks later we did raise 60-something cornish-x's successfully; thank you Joe Salatan!We did use this book as our "bible" using it very often to check weather issues etc ... we moved our chickens three times a day.I read a review that said the book is disorganized, and it is a bit choppy; it has been written over many decades and so plan on taking notes & marking important passages, but I do feel it is an important book and it gave my husband & I the pertinent information to successfully raise a very healthy flock - and let me tell you, these are beautiful healthy birds! We'll be sad to see them go, but next year we'll run 2 tractors and run them twice.
uses many of the same chapters as the other books, so make sure you're buying it for the right reason. If you have "So you think you can farm" in your library, I recommend a different purchase. I applied much of the Salatin model in my straw box garden last season and had great success here in Utah--using less water than the year before, but harvested double. Bio-diversity efforts to build soil (maintaining microorganisms) adds to Salatin's concepts of "grass farming." In the West, there is less water than soil and no shortage of sunshine and heat. Salatin does a great job of risk management for farming for our conditions. You can't go wrong by applying the techniques outlined in his methods.

He gives you the science and business details without boring you to death. You’ll find yourself ready to run out and buy some chicks immediately.
Superb.Joel Salatin lays it all out. We use the ration for layers all year, from chick to adult.We realized feeding less and butchering at a lower weight was a much better mode of operation.First year of following this, 33 chickens, not one death. 6-7 weeks old at butchering, 3.5-4.5lbs. dressed chickens. Completely positive experience.Second year 110 chickens, nearly twenty deaths (overfed- heart and lung failure, perhaps acidosis?) 7-8 weeks old at butchering, 4.5-6lbs. dressed chickens. Once we realized we were feeding too much we slowed down deaths, and eliminated them but it was scary to see so many lost. Online communities can really help diagnose.This book is an extremely useful and comprehensive reference tool. From shelter to butchering, marketing and value. Joel Salatin will pump you up and let you believe in honest food and your part in it. Anyone can do it. I recommend you do it. We started on a quarter acre in a suburb allotment, the heavily treed backyard of my parents. They did so well we moved out to a farm 15 minutes away the next year. If you could raise the birds at your home it would be extremely appealing, to an even greater degree because the constant contact and supervision you could exercise. Still, even being removed from them, it was a great experience.Some of the conditions have changed, internet is now a great tool for marketing. It may be a little more to regulate according to your government but this book needs very little updating, just start. You will make your own adjustments and find it satisfying.
Extremely informative, detailed, and even fun to read. If you know who Salatin is you probably know what you are buying here. Amazon is going to make me write a bunch more stuff because they won't post brief reviews. I'm quite good at lengthy, but I think it's abominable that I am not allowed to be brief on those few occasions when all I want to write is, "Extremely informative, detailed, and even fun to read. I give this book a 5 because of the authoritative approach and the common sense experience relayed. Mr. Salatin is genuine and practical on all the facets of homegrown & processed chickens.
Joel Salatin is an awesome inspiration. We all could learn a thing or two! ;)
Overall, a great resource for anyone who wants to learn how to raise their own chickens. This book is very well-written and well laid out, however being an older book, please remember that some of this information is outdated. We are using his ideas to start our own family farm and with the help of this books, I feel like we have a head start in making this work. :-)
